Insider tips from The Sixpence staff

  1. When considering the size of your guest count, keep in mind other elements that might consume valuable space, like photo stations, interactive moments, champagne walls, etc.
  2. Cabaret style for indoor ceremonies can be a great fit to alleviate additional movement during your cocktail hour.
  3. Want to minimize bar lines? Check out our new display wall embellishment or champagne walls that can be utilized as a drink wall for cocktail hour.
  4. Per Person packages are a great resource when determining your wedding budget.
  5. Our black and white checkered dance floor is an easy way to enhance the vibe of your event and make the dancing experience for your guests (and photos!) more fun.
  6. Don’t forget to secure event insurance for your day. Nuptial is a great resource to obtain this through and they send a copy of your policy directly to us!

A conversation with Shelby Dempsey, owner and Lead Designer of The Sixpence

I feel so overwhelmed, where do I start?

Feeling this way is completely normal. The best thing you can do is focus on the important stuff – marrying the love of your life surrounded by the people you love most. From there, start planning. I’d recommend identifying your priorities for the wedding with your partner. This will help clarify how the budget will be allocated, the look & feel of your day, and the best way forward!

How far in advance should I be looking for my wedding venue?

If you have your heart set on a venue, it’s never too early to start looking (for example, The Sixpence currently has weddings booked out as far as late 2027 right now)! Most book their wedding venue between 8-18 months out from their day! If you’re specifically looking only at Saturdays, I’d recommend a longer lead time!

What are the biggest mistakes you see couples make when planning?

  1. Booking a venue that they only like part of with plans to distract or cover other parts with floral & decor (this is SO expensive)!
    • Instead, choose a venue that you think is lovely as it stands. This sets you up for an effortless wedding day design, flexibility in decor budget, and impacts your photos & video in a hugely positive way!
  2. Booking a venue with no heat, AC, or handicap parking (talk about the worst kind of headache on wedding day)!
  3. Skipping a professional day of coordinator
    • Asking a friend of family member with no wedding coordination experience to run your day results in headache for everyone involved & limits that loved on from being able to truly relax and celebrate. A professional coordinator will make sure you get the most value and enjoyment possible out of all the hard work you’ve put into your day!
  4. Trying to DIY too much (especially weekend & day of)
    • Your wedding weekend is one of the only times in your whole life when all of your dearest loved ones will be in one place. Spend that precious time with them and let the professionals fold napkins, set florals, and serve cake. The truest luxuries in life are the loved ones we have and the time we get to spend with them.

How much should we expect to spend for the total wedding?

Everyone is different, and the things each couple decides to prioritize will impact this. That being said, according to Wedding Report, weddings in Indiana with a guest count of 100-150 sit between $25,253-$30,865. I personally think couples should expect to sit on the higher end of that range, and naturally plan for the budget to expand if the guest count rises (adding ~$150 per guest added). This is not an exact science, and couples often go far above or below these numbers. The best advice I can give is to be flexible on your day of the week – everything is cheaper on non-Saturday and non-holiday dates!

What to do if it’s scorching hot on your wedding day

First, make sure you book a venue with plenty of air conditioning and that has a generator. Second, if you’re getting married outside, select a ceremony location that has tree coverage if you’re able to! If you’re getting married at The Sixpence consider The Lawn or The Grotto! Third, prioritize ice water stations and consider passing out something like parasols or fans so guests can block the sun!
