The appetizers can be just as personal. Maybe your first first date involved burgers at a friend’s backyard cookout, making mini sliders the perfect passed bite. Perhaps you fell in love with fresh seafood in a trip to Cape Cod, and oysters make a sentimental addition to your cocktail menu. If there are favorite foods that didn’t quite make it into your dinner menu, cocktail hour is the perfect place to include them.
Don’t overlook the small details, either: custom drink stirrers, cocktail napkins, appetizer picks, or charcuterie skewers featuring your wedding crest, monogram, or custom illustration add another layer of personality while tying your entire design together. Perhaps the best way to elevate cocktail hour is surprisingly simple: be there.
Many couples spend the majority of cocktail hour away, taking portraits with their photographer after the ceremony. Our advice is to make sure these precious photos don’t mean you skip the full cocktail hour. We think you should enjoy the hard work you’ve done to design this special time. How?
Consider doing a first look before the ceremony, and many of your newlywed portraits can be completed earlier in the day. This allows you to shorten, or even skip a lengthy post-ceremony portrait session, giving you more time to actually experience your cocktail hour alongside your guests. Set on your first look happening at the end of the aisle? Consider extending your cocktail hour so you two have time to join. (Just plan on cocktail hour sips and bites that will satisfy your guests!)
Some of the sweetest moments happen during this part of the day: sharing hugs with loved ones, introducing friends who have never met, stealing a few appetizers before dinner, and soaking in the joy you’ve spent months planning.
After all, it’s your celebration too!
